NORTHERN PACIFIC
POSTWAR AAR 40’ BOX CARS
In 1945, the Northern Pacific
acquired 500 all steel 40’ box cars from Pullman Standard. The road purchased an additional 500 similar
cars from American Car and Foundry in 1946.
Then, in 1947, another 1000 cars were built at the NP company
shops. These cars were built to the AAR
standard design of the era, using 4/4 Improved
Dreadnaught ends and rectangular panel roofs.
Both the 1945 and 1947 orders had Apex running boards, while 250 each of
the 1946 order used Morton and Transco running boards.
This kit is available in 3 versions,
as the cars came with two different door designs, two different truck styles,
and different running boards. Refer to
the list below to determine what version is appropriate for you.
The kit contains a pair of polyurethane resin ends, polyurethane or styrene running board as appropriate to the series, a Pacific Rail Shops undecorated shell with detail parts and trucks, PRS 8 rung ladders, CDS dry transfer lettering, car data with expanded instructions, and a few other bits and pieces required to build an accurate model of this prototype.
This box car is also available as an unboxed conversion kit (see 500 series below,) for which the modeler must supply a PRS 10’6” IH AAR box car kit. Polyurethane resin ends, PRS 8 rung ladders, CDS dry transfer lettering, car data with expanded instructions, and a few other bits and pieces are included; some versions include polyurethane running boards as well.
