40’ Murphy XLA
Roof
One of the most common style roofs during the teens and twenties
was the metal or metal covered roof with plain battens. The best known brand was Standard
Railway Equipment Manufacturing Company’s Murphy XLA roof, which was installed
on many USRA boxcars, among others.
Many other manufacturers had very similar competing products. This ABS molding, manufactured by SHS,
has an attached wooden running board, and comes with alternate style polyurethane
resin lateral extensions (not pictured, but with 7 boards running parallel to
the main running boards.)
